— our services
Removal of failed, eroded or inappropriate mortar joints and replacement with a correctly specified mortar mix, restoring weather resistance, structural integrity and the appearance of brick, stone and block masonry.
— about this service
Procure Damp Proofing Group's masonry repointing service removes all defective mortar to an adequate depth, prepares the joint and reinstates with a correctly specified mortar mix matched to the age, construction and exposure of the wall. Specifying the right mortar is critical. Hard, cement-rich mortars applied to older soft brick or stone can cause spalling and long-term fabric damage. Procure selects mortar specifications appropriate to the masonry, including lime-based mixes for pre-1919 construction, ensuring the repointing protects the wall without damaging it. Repointing is often carried out in combination with masonry protection coatings or crack stitching as part of a coordinated external fabric repair programme.
— our process
The existing mortar joints are assessed for depth of failure, profile and composition. The brick or stone type and wall age are considered to specify a replacement mortar that is appropriate in strength, permeability and appearance.
Failed mortar is cut out to a minimum depth of 20mm using appropriate tools, taking care not to damage the brick or stone arises. The joint is cleaned out and dampened in preparation for the new mortar.
New mortar is applied in the correct profile, tooled to match the existing pointing style where required and finished neatly. The completed work is protected from rapid drying in hot or windy conditions to ensure proper curing.
— benefits
Using too hard a mortar on soft brick or stone forces moisture movement through the masonry units rather than the joint, causing spalling and long-term fabric damage. Procure specifies mortar strength and composition to match the wall, not simply to the convenience of a standard mix.
Failed pointing accounts for a significant proportion of penetrating damp cases. Procure identifies defective pointing as part of its damp survey process and addresses it as the primary intervention where it is the root cause, rather than recommending more involved remediation unnecessarily.
— faq
Signs of failed pointing include visibly recessed, crumbling or missing mortar joints, damp patches on internal walls after rainfall, efflorescence on the external face and frost spalling to brick edges. Procure's damp survey includes an assessment of external pointing as standard.
Procure Damp Proofing Group provides correctly specified masonry repointing across Bedfordshire, with no hidden costs and a 12-month workmanship guarantee.
— Other Services
Repointing is most effective when combined with masonry protection coatings to reduce surface water absorption and crack stitching where structural movement has opened joints. Procure manages all three as a coordinated external repair programme where required.
